Episode highlights
Early intervention is crucial. Children's brain is developing and that entire system is continuing to develop. So when it comes to speech therapy services, the earlier the better. As humans, we are natural communicators. And for little ones, if they're not starting to talk, if they're not starting to show indicators that they are wanting to communicate, we want to know what else is going on, what else is there?
The important thing is to get in early, get an evaluation, get an assessment early, and then we can determine if those recommendations for speech therapy services are warranted. And that makes all the difference.
Considering whether speech therapy is right for your child?
If your child mispronounces certain words, you can manipulate certain situations and manipulate that opportunity for children to notice: "Oh, you're saying it wrong"
When you manipulate that opportunity, you're allowing them to be the authority. And they love that because they get to be in charge for a little bit and they get to be the one "Oh you're saying it wrong. I know how to say it."
To get the most out of Down Syndrome speech therapy, write a list of certain words or family member names that are really difficult for your children. The more your SLP knows, the more they can help: they can tailor sessions to work on specific challenging areas.
